To reach your destination on time. You are aiming for goal A and moving at speed towards goal B. Aiming can vary from person to person, but in general it is aiming to reach a destination on time, preferably in the same direction as you were travelling.
So the next question is how far you will need to move before reaching your destination. This depends on the terrain. For example, if you are travelling down a hill, you will need to move up a steep incline, if you are travelling uphill you will need to make it descend into a valley.
You should know the correct language to speak, that means first and second language as in many countries, as a beginner you should also be able to communicate, either English or another language. This also includes being able to read and write a language.
The basics of orienteering include knowledge of the UK and geography. It’s recommended that the orienteer has either played orienteering in school, or does so now, and that they know how to use a map, compass, and/or a GPS.
You should know the name of the place you are travelling to, and the name of the town, which may be the same as the city, and also the proper terms used in your home country. This usually means you will have heard the terms before and so will have a general idea of what to use. You may also be able to find them online.
Your driving skills will probably be checked, this means that you should know how to drive in English and in another language. Again, this will be available online.
If you are new to orienteering, you may not need to bring any extra equipment such as a tent, sleeping bag, or food. And as always be prepared. Even if you don’t need to bring everything you need, it is best to at least have a first aid kit on board.
Orienteering is fun, and it’s also educational. It is often a good way to stay in shape and to learn about nature. You are learning to observe and plan for the weather, this will help you if you ever have to make a move in bad weather.
It’s always summer sports. You can join an organised orienteering session, or even train on your own. You can even set up your own!
There are lots of online orienteering training sessions to choose from, which will help you improve your skills, including maps, route directions, weather conditions, and lots more. You can attend a weekend course, or a week long class. An organised orienteering session will usually last for three days and will teach you everything you need to know.
When choosing a course, check that it covers the basic elements of orienteering, so that you can avoid problems in the future. Don’t forget that any professional orienteering class will be taught by a qualified trainer, so you’ll learn the right techniques.
